Workshop Descriptions
Everyone is unique and no two job searches are exactly the same. Your job search is your own, and, yet, in today’s complicated job market, there are common strategies that are proven to work. Additionally, we’ve create workshops to help job seekers respond to the Covid-19 crisis and the current employment environment we find ourselves.
The workshops listed below teach you the tried and true job search strategies-and more. They are broken into three areas:

Orientation
This is your introduction to the Career Center. While you are welcome to take our workshops in any order, we advise you to join our Orientation first. It will help you learn more about:
- Our services and training opportunities;
- The Federal Workforce Innovation Opportunity Act (WOIA) program;
- Networking with employers and other job seekers.
Anchor Strategies
We believe there are a number of basic strategies that should anchor your job search. Without these skills or knowledge, success can be elusive, so the skills you learn in these workshops become the foundation of your efforts. Additionally, each of these workshops are required for job seekers to be eligible for WIOA-funding training dollars. Anchor Strategy workshops are offered multiple times each month at various times of the day, making it easier for job seekers to attend.
Covid-19 Job Search
The job market has changed significantly with COVID-19, but that does not mean you need to put your career on hold. Companies are still hiring and networking is happening virtually. In this webinar, we will show you where to find jobs, how to leverage your online network, participate in online training, and prepare for virtual job interviews so that you can find gainful employment.
Online Training Opportunities
Now is a great time to learn new skills while waiting for the next career opportunity. Whether you want to sharpen software skills or explore completely new fields, this webinar will showcase online training programs and professional development opportunities you can start right now. You will also learn how to qualify for the California Training Benefits program and extend your unemployment benefits while pursuing training.
Job Club
Job searches don’t have to be conducted alone and studies show that successful job seekers join job or networking clubs. Facilitated by TVCC staff, our Job Club attendees receive support, swap leads, offer feedback, and benefit from guest speakers. Members empower themselves and each other to develop smart, savvy solutions to overcome obstacles and celebrate successes in a job hunt. Job Club meets 10:00 AM every Thursday morning.
Dynamic Resumes and Cover Letters
Your resume is the foundation of a job search and your ticket to an interview. This workshop teaches you how to target you resume to set yourself apart from other applicants. We touch on different types of resumes, different sections of the resume and how to write powerful accomplishment statements. (Required for job seekers to be eligible for WIOA-funding training.)
Networking and the Hidden Job Market
Even though the job search seems impersonal, more jobs are actually found through networking than any other means. This means job seekers need to get out to meet people and this workshop helps take the fear out of asserting yourself. You’ll learn skills to make networking easier and less anxiety-ridden, how to set up informational interviews, and how to expand your networks and find “the hidden job market.” (Required for job seekers to be eligible for WIOA-funding training.)
Ace the Interview
No one likes to be under the microscope, which is what interviewing can feel like. And yet, it is a necessary part of the job search process. In this workshop, we teach key secrets to help you ace your next interview. We cover different kinds of interviews such as phone, panel and behavioral types. Also covered are pre-interview preparation and how to answer some of the most frequently asked questions. (Required for job seekers to be eligible for WIOA-funding training.)
Career Pivots and WIOA-Funded Training
Oftentimes job seekers find they need more training to be competitive in today’s job market. A specific certification can provide needed skills and knowledge that employers are seeking. There are many training options for a variety of fields, interests and occupations. This workshop covers access to free online trainings, apprenticeships, local adult schools – with special attention to the paperwork needed for our WIOA-funded training. It also covers the career planning process, as well as where to research the local labor market. (Required for job seekers to be eligible for WIOA-funding training.)
Added Learning
To be successful, job seekers need to take advantage of every strategy available. Our Added Learning workshops teach skills and pass on knowledge about subjects that have helped our local job seekers be more competitive in the market place.
Career Assessments
Anytime you change employers, there is an opportunity to assess your situation and your future. Making a major career decision involves career- or self-assessment and involves asking yourself a number of self-reflecting questions that determine what motivates you, where your skills and potential lie, and what you want out of life. This workshop touches on different types of assessments, their pros & cons, where to find free options and what to do with your results.
Building Your LinkedIn Profile
LinkedIn is now an essential networking and job search tool that three-quarters of recruiters use to find qualified applicants. This workshop covers tips to create a strong profile so that you can be recognized for your skills. We discuss strategies for optimizing each area of your profile so you stand out.
Leveraging LinkedIn for Your Job Search
Once you have your profile where you want it, it’s time to use the platform to help your job search and beyond. This workshop covers tips to find jobs and people on LinkedIn that will help you secure a job that fits you and your goals. You will learn to use LinkedIn filters, how to engage productively, Easy Apply and Virtual Interviews.
Using “Soft Skills” to Find Work
These days, employers are looking for soft skills in addition to technical skills in their applicants. This workshop focuses on the people and communication skills, as well as character and attitude factors, that help prospective employees get hired. We touch on the skills as well as how to demonstrate that you possess them in your resume and interview.
Tips for the “Older” Worker
Our job seekers are a wonderful mix of generations, with an amazing breadth of experience and wisdom. Workers over 40, however, face a different set of issues than their younger counterparts. This workshop speaks directly to the issues that older job seekers face and share skills and tricks to overcome those issues, including tips to use on your resume, in interviews and beyond.
Beating Applicant Tracking Software
Every Career Advisor worth their weight will tell you to network to your next job- to get up from in front of your computer and meet people. And yet, the online application is still a large component of the job search process. The problem is that traditional resumes don’t often work with the recruiting software used by employers. This workshop teaches tricks to format your resume to work with the Applicant Tracking Software so that you can beat the filtering systems and be seen.

Occasionally, we offer special workshops on a one-time basis that can help job seekers on specific subjects. Current offerings are announced on our calendar, in our newsletter, and at the Career Center.
Social Media Webinar
Social media can be fun and expressive in the right settings but harmful to your career at the same time. Join us on Monday, to learn how employers use social media when recruiting and ways you can promote a professional public presence in a mindful way.
